Hilton Vacation Club The Modern Honolulu

We recently stayed at the modern Hilton for a week, expecting a high level of service and cleanliness for the price of $2,600. Unfortunately, the experience fell short of expectations. Contrary to the well-lit images on the website, the reality was disappointing—mold along the walls, an aging bed, and a persistent musty smell in the room. On the positive side, the location offered a pleasant view and convenient proximity to the beach and city attractions. One notable inconvenience was the need to present a voucher daily for complimentary water. It would have been more convenient and thoughtful if the hotel staff had placed the water bottles outside the room or offered a morning knock for those interested. While the front desk staff was polite, their lack of initiative and information about local transportation options was evident. This was surprising, especially considering my background in the hospitality industry, where going the extra mile is a standard practice. The most significant disappointment occurred when I discovered my pajamas missing from the room. Despite reporting the issue to the front desk, they seemed indifferent and failed to take any corrective action or offer compensation. In the hospitality industry, such oversights should be addressed promptly and with a genuine concern for guest satisfaction. In hindsight, spending an additional $600 for a stay at the Prince Waikiki down the street, which reportedly provides superior service, would have been a more worthwhile investment. For those deliberating on accommodations, I highly recommend considering the Prince Waikiki over the Hilton based on my less-than-satisfactory experience.

We had an amazing stay with the Modern. Everything from the get go was superb. Hotel’s location is incredible, short walking distance to Honolulu’s hottest spots and super close to the beach. The staff was friendly, especially John! He is the nicest guy ever! Super friendly and helpful :) Overall I really recommend staying at this hotel plus they have good food at the Grove restaurant ;)

Don't be fooled - this is a time-share property and you feel that the entire time you stay at this hotel. We went into this expecting a mid-level hotel but the experience was far below our expectations. Very poor staff service. No welcome upon arrival or asking how we found the stay at checkout. At check-in they just asked for our name and a credit card. We were then directed to their concierge with a very budget looking print out map of the hotel and a list of activities they would book for us. Everything felt like an upsell. Selective Reno’s done in the room to make it photograph well but everything is in rough shape. The bed was incredibly lumpy and the carpet was absolutely disgusting. Bathroom had mould in several areas. Two issues specific to our stay We had brought some food back to the room after a day out and asked the front desk if they could provide plates and wine glasses. We were told that they can't do this (though they provide room service) and that the pool bar may be able to help provide paper cups and plates. The pool bar staff was able to provide this but paper cups and plates (this was not for environmental purposes) just feels like a cheap motel. We ran out of soap in the room and were told they were out of replacement bottles so they provided a plastic bag full of mini bottles - they never came back to properly replace the soap. The mandatory resort fee offers no benefits at all unless you want to spend more.

We had an 11 night stay at The Modern and it was very nice. This is more of what we call a home base hotel. You spend the day out exploring and head back home to your room at the end of the day. The pool isn’t anything special but the public lagoon and beach next door is a fun option instead. The bar is great. We had drinks a few times there and service was wonderful. The restaurant is just okay for breakfast but, for the price, I think you can do better out at other local places. If you want good coffee, take just a little walk off-property and you will find it.
